Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s a guide to help you acclimate to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure accommodation

Steer clear of costly hotels by organizing your lodging ahead of time. I was fortunate, but not everyone shares that luck. The prime choices disappear quickly, so seek something close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to evade lengthy commutes.

Essential life tasks

Address these essential tasks shortly after reaching London:

Money transfer – as an international student, discover a dependable method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one promptly to prevent feeling lost without data.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. You’ll require an account for transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, library usage, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as possible.

The significance of the first week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal. Meet roommates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 clubs and societies and engage in areas that pique your interest.

Even if you are reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I made close friends during campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Smart travel in London

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.

Walking remains a fantastic way to explore and uncover hidden treasures in London.

Identify your favorite spots

London can be overwhelming. Locate a place of comfort, such as a park, cafe, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My chosen places include a nearby park and the O2, where I relax every week.

Discover the city

Familiarize yourself with your campus and surrounding areas. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred dining spots.

Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for the scenery. Some of your fondest memories will stem from spontaneous explorations.

Final pointers for starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas often fail in the wind.

Join unusual events to craft memorable stories.

Don’t panic if you feel disoriented; it’s absolutely normal initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.

Discover more about my experiences, read my Imperial narrative.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon my initial arrival in London, I perceived it to be expansive, noisy, and quite daunting.
