Arriving in London at first was a bit daunting with its enormity and rapid tempo. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about how to start. If you find yourself in a similar boat, there’s no need to panic. Here are some tips to assist you in acclimating to London before diving into your studies at Imperial, allowing you to fully enjoy your new life in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you get here weeks in advance or right before classes start, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

Secure Your Accommodation First<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prevent expensive hotel expenses by arranging your accommodation ahead of time. I got lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone, as the optimal places are claimed quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or along a well-connected Tube line to ease your morning travels.<\/p>\n

Important Administrative Tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When you land in London, make these tasks your priority:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers \u2013 As an overseas student, find a dependable and economical method to move funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut are excellent for favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM Card \u2013 Obtain one promptly to ensure you have data for navigating your new surroundings.<\/li>\n
  • Bank Account \u2013 Some banks may require a UK address, but online banking options like Monzo or Starling are swift and friendly to students. Set up an account for your day-to-day spending and part-time job deposits.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID Card \u2013 This is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Maximize Your Initial Week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week is crucial for your overall student experience. It\u2019s when you connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that spark your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you\u2019re reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Navigate London Wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I found the Tube and buses confusing and ended up walking nine kilometers across the city. Prevent this by acquiring your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures in the city.<\/p>\n

    Identify Your Go-To Places<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be quite intimidating, particularly in the beginning. Having a comfort zone is beneficial \u2013 mine is a local park that I visit daily to unwind. Additionally, the O2, just a ten-minute walk away, is where I treat myself to a movie each week.<\/p>\n

    Discover your own spots, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Discover the City<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Become familiar with your new neighborhood around campus and home. Pinpoint your closest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries or coffee shops.<\/p>\n

    Explore iconic landmarks, check out free museums, ride a double-decker bus, and meander without a specific itinerary. Some of your most cherished memories will come from the delight of getting a bit lost!<\/p>\n

    Final Suggestions Before Starting at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for disposable ones.<\/li>\n
    • Purchase a waterproof jacket; umbrellas tend to fail in the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events for memorable tales.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s a common feeling at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything planned out on your first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already in a better position than I was when I began at Imperial. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
