Here\u2019s how to kick off your new life in London before beginning your journey at Imperial, letting you savor the city.<\/p>\n<p>No matter if you arrive weeks ahead or right before term begins, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received at my arrival.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First and foremost: secure a place to stay<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>To evade pricey hotel stays, arrange your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the best choices get taken quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or an efficient Tube line \u2013 lengthy commutes aren\u2019t suited for early morning lectures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Administrative necessities: addressing essential tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Upon your arrival in London, tackle these essentials without delay:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, find an affordable method to transfer funds from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 having mobile data is vital for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan soon after you arrive.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 though some banks may need a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and cater well to students. Establish an account for day-to-day transactions and payments from part-time work.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 this will provide access to campus facilities, library usage, and student discounts. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university journey.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable \u2013 avoid making the same mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to navigate the city affordably.<\/p>\n<p>Walking is still an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures in London.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can feel intense, especially at the start. Having a sanctuary is helpful \u2013 mine is a nearby park where I go to unwind. The O2 is another favorite retreat where I enjoy a movie weekly.<\/p>\n<p>Discover your own havens, whether it\u2019s a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to relax and re-energize.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>And remember to venture out!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Get acquainted with your new environment around campus and your residence. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your go-to food or coffee spots.<\/p>\n<p>Explore notable landmarks, free museums, and take a hop on a red double-decker bus. Many of your cherished memories will arise from unplanned explorations.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final suggestions before jumping into<\/strong> student life at Imperial<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Acquire a reusable bag \u2013 stores often charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas can\u2019t withstand strong winds.<\/li>\n<li>Accept invitations to quirky events \u2013 they lead to great stories.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common experience initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t need to have every detail sorted on day one.
