Everything was noisy, rapid, and a tad intimidating. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I was overwhelmed. If you’re about to face this, don’t fret. Here’s how to get your new life in London sorted before you begin at Imperial, allowing you to relish being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you show up weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

First Step: Secure Your Housing

Prevent pricey hotel accommodations by organizing your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime options are snatched up quickly. Try to find a place close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line – early morning classes can be challenging if you’re over an hour away.

Crucial Life Administration

When you reach London, tackle these essentials swiftly:

Money transfers – as an international student, identify a dependable and budget-friendly method to send money from your home country. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM card – navigating a new environment is tough without data. Acquire a UK SIM and data plan shortly after your arrival.

Establish a bank account – some banks require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Open an account for daily transactions and part-time job payments.

Student identification card – this allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you’ll interact with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage with Welcome Week to uncover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and join the ones that pique your interest.

Even if you are reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I made close friends during campus tours and society showcases. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Intelligent Travel around London

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable – avoid my blunder. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to reduce Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains the best way to soak in the city and its culture. London has hidden treasures waiting to be uncovered through exploration.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can feel emotionally intense, especially at first. Identifying a comfort location is beneficial – mine is the park close to my residence. I go there daily to unwind. My secondary spot is the O2, just a 10-minute trip away, where I enjoy a movie weekly.

Seek out your own places, such as a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and refresh.

Venture into the City

Familiarize yourself with the areas you will visit often around campus and home. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee venues.

Explore well-known attractions. Dedicate weekends to discovering your new city. Visit free museums. Take a ride on a red double-decker bus for scenic views. Roam around aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from getting slightly lost!

Final Suggestions Before Embarking on Imperial Life

Carry a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often fall short in the wind.

Participate in unconventional events – they create great anecdotes.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience at first.

You don’t need to have it all sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London story one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing When I landed in London, the city felt vast.
