The city was enormous, noisy, and moved at a rapid pace. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt lost on where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London prior to beginning your studies at Imperial, enabling you to make the most of your new urban life.

Whether you arrive a few weeks in advance or just before the semester starts, here’s the guidance I wish someone had shared with me.

Secure Accommodations

To avoid costly hotels, book your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is so fortunate. The best options disappear quickly, so choose a residence near campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize long travel times.

Administrative Matters: Key Essentials to Organize

As soon as you land in London, focus on these key essentials:

Money transfers – International students need a reliable method for transferring funds. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Obtain one promptly to secure data for navigation.

Bank account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and suitable for students. Create an account for day-to-day transactions and paychecks from part-time jobs.

Student ID card – This is essential for utilizing campus resources, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for connecting with flatmates, peers, and prospective friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and organizations. Even if you feel shy, make the effort to engage; I forged close relationships during campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Traveling Around London: Smart Navigation

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, ending up walking nine kilometers. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. However, walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London’s enormity can be intimidating, so pinpoint a comforting location. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for films. Discover your own quiet spots like a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench to unwind and recharge.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Find supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Explore iconic sites, free museums, and relish spontaneous strolls. Some of your fondest memories will stem from wandering a bit off path.

Last-Minute Tips Before Starting at Imperial

Bring a reusable bag – Stores charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas are ineffective in windy weather.

Participate in unique events – These provide great anecdotes.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – It’s normal at the beginning.

There’s no need to have it all figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more insights into my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the first time was a daunting experience.
