The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance to help you acclimate to London before your journey at Imperial begins, ensuring you relish your new city adventure.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the term, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon reaching.

Secure Accommodation

Skip the costly hotel fees by arranging your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune as the top choices vanish quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early classes.

Key Life Administration

Upon your arrival in London, focus on these essentials:

Money Transfers: As an international student, discover a reliable and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.

UK SIM Card: Make sure you have data for navigation by acquiring a UK SIM card right away.

Bank Account: Some banks mandate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Set up an account for regular transactions and part-time job deposits.

Student ID Card: This card provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and discounts for students. Obtain it as soon as you can.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and participate in activities that spark your interest.

Even if you’re shy, make an effort to get involved. Some of my closest friendships developed during random campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the tone for your university journey.

Navigate Smartly in London

During my initial week, I walked nine kilometers around London due to confusion regarding the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically on the Tube and buses.

Even so, walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by exploring.

Identify Your Comfort Locations

London can feel emotionally intense, particularly at the start. Having a comforting spot is essential. For me, it’s the park near my residence where I go daily to unwind. My second favorite place is the O2, just a short 10-minute journey away, where I watch films weekly to relax.

Discover your own comforting locations, whether it’s a coffee shop, bookstore, or riverside bench. These places are invaluable for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with the areas you will frequent around campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee spots.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and ride on a red double-decker bus for the views. Roam without a plan; some of your most cherished memories will come from a little unintentional wandering.

Final Recommendations for Starting at Imperial

Use a reusable bag to avoid paying for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t practical in windy conditions.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable stories.

Don’t be concerned if you feel lost; it’s a common feeling at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco errand at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was an overwhelming experience.
