The city felt enormous, bustling, and incredibly dynamic. Armed with a single suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to be anxious. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, so you can relish the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just ahead of the term, here’s the advice I wish had been shared with me.

Locate Accommodation

Skip the expensive hotels by securing lodging early. The most desirable places get taken quickly! Look for somewhere conveniently close to campus or near a reliable Tube line to simplify those early morning travels.

Administrative Essentials

Take care of these necessities right after landing in London:

Money Transfers – As an international student, find a dependable method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide good exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Obtain one promptly for data and navigation in a new city.

Bank Account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID Card – Crucial for entering campus buildings, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital for meeting roommates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged close friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel

In my first week, I ended up walking nine kilometers around London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card for discounted transport. However, walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel daunting. Seek out a comforting spot, such as a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. Personally, my favorite spots include a local park and the O2 for catching movies.

Get Out and Explore!

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your residence. Find local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and savor spontaneous strolls. Many of the best memories arise from a little detour.

Final Recommendations

Carry a reusable bag to sidestep charges for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t very effective during windy conditions.

Join unique events to create memorable stories.

Don’t stress if you feel a bit lost; it’s a normal part of the experience at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already making progress. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

For more insights into my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/l

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite an experience.
