Stepping into London for the first time can be quite a lot to take in. The city appears immense, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to go through this, relax. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you acclimatize to London before commencing your journey at Imperial, so you can relish your new city life.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just ahead of the term, here\u2019s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

Secure Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of expensive hotel stays by sorting out your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The best choices get snapped up quickly, so aim for a residence close to your campus or on a reliable Tube line to dodge lengthy commutes.<\/p>\n

Upon reaching, focus on these priorities:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers: As an international student, seek an economical way to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n

  • Bank Account: Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly, vital for transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID Card: This is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The First Week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week is crucial. It\u2019s when you\u2019ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re reserved, try to involve yourself; I formed solid friendships during campus tours and society activities. This week will shape your university journey.<\/p>\n

    Navigate London Wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. Instead, obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical travel. Walking is still an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.<\/p>\n

    Identify Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be a lot, so seek out a comforting space. Mine is a local park where I take time each day to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another favorite spot for enjoying a movie. Find your own spots, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to assist you in relaxing and recharging.<\/p>\n

    Discover the City<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Acquaint yourself with your new neighborhood around campus and your residence. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from unexpected escapades.<\/p>\n
