The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t fret. Here’s how to kickstart your new life in London before you begin at Imperial, so you can fully enjoy the city.

Whether you arrive early or just in time for the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Locate your accommodation

Secure your lodging ahead of time to steer clear of pricey hotel bills. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Search for a spot close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for those early lectures.

Essential tasks: life admin

Upon reaching London, tackle these essential tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, seek a dependable way to transfer funds. Apps such as Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one swiftly to ensure you have data for navigation in your new environment.

Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and suited for students. Open an account for daily transactions and any part-time employment.

Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as soon as you can.

The significance of your first week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time you connect with flatmates, classmates, and prospective friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to join in. I forged strong friendships during campus tours and society activities. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I walked nine kilometers across London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. Don’t make the same error. Acquire a Student Oyster card and register for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort spots

London can be overwhelming. Discover a comfort space, like a park or café, to unwind and recharge. For me, it’s a nearby park and the O2 for weekly movie nights. Find your own spots of comfort within the city.

Discover the city

Acquaint yourself with the areas surrounding campus and your residence. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining spots. Tour notable landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy a double-decker bus ride. Some of your fondest memories will stem from getting a little lost.

Last-minute tips before starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – shops typically charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective against wind.

Join unique events – they create excellent stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common at first.

You don’t need to have it all sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco run at a time.

To find out more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was intimidating.
