The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. Equipped solely with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to take on a similar adventure, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to life in London before starting at Imperial, ensuring you can fully embrace the experience.

Whether you arrive weeks ahead or right before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Housing Promptly

Prevent costly hotel expenses by arranging housing in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The top choices vanish quickly. Aim to reside close to campus or on a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early morning classes.

Crucial Life Admin Tasks

Upon your arrival, focus on these essentials:

Funds Transfer: As an international student, discover an economical method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.

UK SIM Card: Navigating a new city is tough without data. Obtain a UK SIM card and a data plan right away.

Bank Account: Some banks request a UK address, yet digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Open an account for daily expenses and any part-time employment.

Student ID Card: This card is essential for accessing campus buildings, library facilities, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Maximize Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for your student journey. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to join in. I met some of my closest friends during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. This week shapes the foundation of your university experience.

Navigate Smartly in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across the city. It was unforgettable but hectic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel. Walking is still an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally intense. Having a comfort place helps. My refuge is a local park where I unwind. The O2, located just 10 minutes away, is another go-to for enjoying a movie. Seek out your own relaxing spots, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These areas are priceless for unwinding and recharging.

Discover the City

Get acquainted with your new environment. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots. Visit notable landmarks and explore the city over weekends. Enjoy free museums, take a ride on a double-decker bus, and explore aimlessly. Some of your favorite memories will arise from getting a bit lost.

Last Tips for Beginning at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas struggle against the wind.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t panic if you feel disoriented; it’s completely normal initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I began. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

Discover more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London was at first a daunting experience for me.
