Equipped with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t be concerned. Here are some tips to guide you as you adjust to your new life in London prior to commencing your studies at Imperial, allowing you to fully enjoy the thrill of being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you get here weeks ahead or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the insight I wish I had when I landed.

Secure your living arrangements

To avoid pricey hotel costs, plan your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is; the best places get snapped up quickly. Try to find a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, as long journeys are challenging with early morning classes.

Administrative tasks: organizing essentials

Once you settle into London, tackle these essentials without delay:

Money transfers – as an international student, seek out a trustworthy and cost-effective method to send money from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.

UK SIM card – navigation becomes difficult without data. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.

Bank account – certain banks necessitate a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and cater well to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job salaries.

Student ID card – this grants access to university facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as swiftly as you can.

The significance of your inaugural week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student life. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that pique your interest.

Even if you feel shy, urge yourself to engage. I did and met some of my closest companions during campus tours and society events. Your initial week shapes the course of your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I had no clue about the Tube or buses, leading to a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable – don’t make the same mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to make traveling on the Tube and buses economical.

Walking remains a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture, revealing hidden treasures as you explore.

Identify your comfort zones

Initially, London can feel overwhelming. Having a favorite spot can help — mine is a nearby park where I find solace every day. Another is the O2, just a 10-minute journey away, where I view movies weekly to decompress.

Discover your own comfort zones, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or bench by the river, to unwind and regroup amidst the hustle of the big city.

Discover the city

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and home. Find out where the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your go-to food or coffee places are.

Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for a scenic view, and wander about without a specific plan. Many of your fondest memories will stem from getting a little lost!

Final pointers before commencing your Imperial student journey

Utilize a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use bags.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t much help in the wind.

Partake in unconventional events – they yield fantastic stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience at first.

You don’t need to have everything figured out on day one. If you’re looking at this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I came to Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

To delve deeper into my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon arriving in London for the very first time, the city appeared vast, noisy, fast-moving, and somewhat daunting.
