The city felt immense, loud, and overwhelming. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you are about to face this, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before your time at Imperial begins, so you can relish the city.

No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had.

Prioritize Finding Accommodation

Steer clear of costly hotel accommodations by securing a place early. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune. The prime options get snapped up fast! Search for somewhere close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize commuting time.

Handle Essential Life Admin

After arriving in London, tackle these essentials without delay:

Money transfers – International students require reasonable options to transfer funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Navigating without data is challenging. Quickly acquire a UK SIM card and data plan.

Bank account – While some banks ask for a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and student-friendly. Establish an account for daily expenses and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – This is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Secure it as soon as possible.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week is significant. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, make an effort to join in. I formed close friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society stalls. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Smart Travel in London

During my first week, I ended up walking nine kilometers across London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Obtain a Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking is also fantastic for uncovering hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Spaces

London can be overwhelming. Having a comforting spot can be beneficial. Mine is a park close to my residence where I go to unwind. The O2, only ten minutes away, is another favorite for kicking back with a film. Discover your own places, whether it be a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

Discover the City

Get acquainted with the surroundings of your campus and residence. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops. Visit iconic sights, explore free museums, hop on a double-decker bus, and meander without a set plan. Some of your best experiences will arise from getting a bit lost.

Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial

Bring a reusable bag – Shops charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas aren’t reliable in windy conditions.

Participate in unique events – They create excellent stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – It’s entirely normal at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more about my journey, explore my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Coming to London for the first time was intimidating.
