Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London prior to beginning your journey at Imperial.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here&#8217;s what I wished I had known when I landed.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Prevent costly hotel expenses by arranging your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as prime options vanish swiftly. Strive to find a place near your campus or a reliable Tube line to avoid lengthy travels for early classes.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Essential tasks for settling in<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once you\u2019re in London, tackle these necessary items without delay:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, discover an economical method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide good exchange rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one promptly to ensure you have data for navigation in your new environment.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 certain banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and favorable for students. Open an account for everyday banking and part-time job earnings.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 this allows access to campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Significance of your initial week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your first week is vital for shaping your student experience. Meet your flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies that align with your interests.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you&#8217;re naturally reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and formed close friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Smart travel in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In my initial week, my lack of familiarity with the Tube and buses led to a nine-kilometer hike across London. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to enable cheaper travel.<\/p>\n<p>Walking remains an excellent way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Initially, London can be emotionally taxing. Having a go-to place can help \u2013 mine is a local park where I visit daily to unwind. The O2, merely a 10-minute walk away, is another location where I relax weekly while watching a movie.<\/p>\n<p>Identify your own comfort zones, whether it&#8217;s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These havens are crucial for relaxation and recharging.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Adventure through the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred food or coffee joints.<\/p>\n<p>Check out iconic sites, explore complimentary museums, and enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus. Many of your best memories will arise from impromptu excursions.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Last-minute advice before starting at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Bring a reusable bag \u2013 stores frequently charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<li>Purchase a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas struggle against rain driven by wind.<\/li>\n<li>Engage with quirky events \u2013 they often yield the finest stories.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented at first \u2013 it&#8217;s a typical experience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don&#8217;t need to have every detail sorted on your first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I found myself.
