Stepping into London for the very first time was an extraordinary experience. The city felt vast, bustling, and relentless. With a single suitcase in one hand and Google Maps guiding me in the other, I felt somewhat disoriented. If you are gearing up for a similar adventure, there’s no need for concern. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you acclimatize to your new life in London before starting at Imperial, enabling you to make the most of your time in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you’re landing a few weeks in advance or just right before the term kicks off, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had received on my arrival.<\/p>\n

First on the agenda: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Book your accommodation early to steer clear of costly hotel fees. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime spots are snatched up quickly. Aim to locate a residence near your campus or close to a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy journeys for early morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Administrative essentials: sorting out the basics<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you arrive in London, there are a few key matters to handle promptly:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, you will need an economical way to send funds from your home nation. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 having data is vital for navigating a new city. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account establishment \u2013 some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Setting up a bank account is crucial for daily transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this card is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to get it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The inaugural week at Imperial is paramount<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student journey. It\u2019s an opportunity to meet roommates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-organized clubs and societies, and register for activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you consider yourself shy, make an effort to engage. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and club events. Your initial week sets the stage for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: smart travel tips<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I didn’t grasp how to use the Tube or buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid my blunder by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for cost-effective travel on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains a fantastic way to explore the city and unearth hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Discover your go-to spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally taxing, especially at the beginning. Having a comforting place is important \u2013 for me, it\u2019s the park near my residence. I go there daily to unwind. My other refuge is the O2, just a short 10-minute trip, where I enjoy movies each week.<\/p>\n

    Identify your own comforting spots, be it a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or a riverside bench. Such places offer a space to unwind and recharge.<\/p>\n

    And be sure to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get acquainted with your new environment around campus and your residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.<\/p>\n

    Visit iconic landmarks, explore complimentary museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the scenery. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from spontaneous escapades.<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before plunging into Imperial student life<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Pick up a reusable bag \u2013 many shops charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Purchase a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas are often ineffective against the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events \u2013 they lead to remarkable stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common experience at the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. By reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I initiated my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure, one bus ride and trip to Tesco at a time.<\/p>\n
