The city felt vast, noisy, and energetic. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself at a loss on where to start. If you’re facing a similar scenario, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before beginning your journey at Imperial, enabling you to fully embrace the adventure of being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you’re getting there weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here’s the counsel I wished I had received upon my arrival.

First of all: secure a residence

Avoid pricey hotel bookings by arranging accommodations ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime choices disappear swiftly. Try to find somewhere close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early morning classes.

Administrative tasks: tackling the essential needs

As soon as you land in London, take care of these vital tasks without delay:

Money transfers – as an international student, look for a trustworthy and cost-effective method to send money from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.

UK SIM card – ensure you have mobile data for navigation by obtaining a UK SIM card right away.

Establishing a bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-oriented, important for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – this allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as you can.

Your initial week at Imperial is critical

Your first week at Imperial is vital for shaping your student experience. It’s the opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and future comrades. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that appeal to you.

Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I made some of my best friends during random campus tours and society stalls. The first week is essential in setting the stage for your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

In my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic – don’t make my mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses.

However, walking remains an excellent way to discover the city and stumble upon hidden treasures.

Establish your comfort zones

Initially, London can feel emotionally taxing. Having a favorite retreat is beneficial – mine is a local park where I unwind daily. The O2, just a ten-minute walk away, is another cherished spot for my weekly movie outings.

Identify your own spots of comfort, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to relax and rejuvenate.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with areas around your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your go-to food or coffee venues.

Check out iconic landmarks, investigate free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from getting slightly lost!

Final suggestions before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life

Carry a reusable bag – shops usually charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t work well in strong winds.

Engage in unique events – they lead to great stories.

Don’t stress if you feel out of place – it’s a common experience initially.

You’re not required to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already doing better than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure, one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time was quite an experience.
