The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, rest assured. Here’s some guidance to ease your transition into life in London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish your new experience in the city.

Whether you arrive a few weeks ahead of schedule or just beforehand, here’s the counsel I wish I had received on my arrival.

Secure Your Accommodation

To steer clear of pricey hotel stays, book your living arrangements in advance. I was fortunate, but not everyone has that luck, as the prime options tend to vanish swiftly. Seek a residence close to campus or near a well-connected Tube line to circumvent lengthy commutes to your morning lectures.

Personal Administration: Key Tasks to Handle

Upon arriving in London, tackle these vital tasks without delay:

Fund Transfers – If you’re an international student, identify a trustworthy and economical method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can assist in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Acquire one promptly to ensure you have mobile data for navigation in a new locale or nation.

Bank Account – Certain banks demand a UK address, but digital banking options, such as Monzo or Starling, are quick to set up and accommodating to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time employment compensation.

Student ID Card – This is vital for entry to campus facilities, the library, and availing student discounts. Make it a priority to obtain this as soon as you can.

Your First Week at Imperial: Why It Matters

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal. It’s when you encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, signing up for activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re somewhat reserved, aim to take part. I did, and I forged some of my closest friendships during campus exploratory tours and society showcases. Your first week lays the foundation for your academic experience.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel Tips

At first, I struggled with navigating the Tube or buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable experience but quite chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Establish Your Comfort Zones

Initially, London can be emotionally taxing. Having a go-to comfort place can make a difference. For me, it’s a park near my home, where I visit daily to unwind. My secondary location is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly to decompress.

Discover your own comforting places, whether a cafe, a bookstore, or a riverside seat, to help you relax and reset.

Discover the City

Familiarize yourself with the most frequented zones around your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee establishments.

Tour notable landmarks, explore complimentary museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus for the scenery, and meander without a set plan. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from moments of getting a little off track!

Final Hints Before Joining Imperial

Acquire a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for disposable ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often fail against the wind.

Accept invitations to unusual events – they lead to remarkable tales.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I first set foot at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To delve deeper into my stories, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in.
