The city appeared vast, noisy, and fast-moving. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you are about to go through this, don’t be concerned. Here’s how to settle into London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to appreciate the city.

Whether you come weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure a place to live

Stay away from pricey hotels by arranging accommodation early. I was lucky, but good options disappear quickly. Aim for a spot close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes.

Essential life administration

After arriving in London, take care of these essentials:

Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one right away to avoid getting lost without data access.

Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and student-friendly. Create an account for transactions and payments from part-time work.

Student ID card – necessary for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it without delay.

Your first week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital. Meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week events and discover over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you are reserved, make an effort to engage. I forged close friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the atmosphere for your university experience.

Smart travel in London

During my first week, I traversed nine kilometers across London due to my unfamiliarity with the Tube and buses. Don’t make the same error. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort zones

London can feel overwhelming. Locate a comforting spot, such as a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My favorite places include a nearby park and the O2 for films.

Discover the city

Get to know local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and restaurants. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and relish impromptu walks. Some of your most memorable experiences will arise from wandering a bit off course.

Last bits of advice

Use a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.

Purchase a waterproof jacket; umbrellas are not reliable in windy weather.

Attend unconventional events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s common initially.

You don’t need to have everything planned out on the first day. If you are reading this, you are already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/life-at-imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time was intimidating.
