It was a lot to take in, with everything happening at a fast pace and in loud bursts. With only a suitcase and Google Maps at my disposal, I felt somewhat disoriented. If you’re about to go through this experience, don’t fret. Here’s how to get your new life in London sorted before you kick off at Imperial, enabling you to truly savor the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just as the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon arriving.

First Task: Secure Your Accommodation

If you want to avoid spending a fortune on hotels, it’s best to arrange your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is; the top options go quickly. Try to secure a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line – getting to early lectures is tough if you’re over an hour away.

Key Life Administrative Tasks

Upon reaching London, tackle these crucial tasks right away:

Money Transfers – As an international student, identify an economical method for transferring funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut can help circumvent unfavorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Without data access, finding your way will be challenging. Obtain a UK SIM card and a data plan soon after your arrival.

Setting Up a Bank Account – Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer quick and student-friendly options. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Obtain a Student ID Card – This card is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time when you’ll meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in activities that captivate you.

Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Effective Travel Around London

During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was a hectic but unforgettable experience – don’t mimic what I did. Get your Student Oyster card and register for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses affordably.

Walking remains a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. London is filled with hidden treasures waiting to be discovered through exploration.

Establish Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally taxing, particularly at the beginning. Having a comfort space is beneficial – mine is a local park where I unwind daily. My second spot is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I enjoy watching movies weekly to relax.

Identify your own places, whether it be a café, bookstore, or bench by the river, to recharge and refresh.

Venture Out and Explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your residence. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries or coffee shops.

Explore iconic landmarks on weekends. Visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for a great view, and meander aimlessly. Some of your best experiences will arise from getting a little lost!

Final Suggestions Before Embracing Life at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t fare well against wind.

Participate in unique events – they lead to memorable stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences this at first.

You don’t have to have everything figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For further insights into my experiences, click here.

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing When I landed in London for the first time, I was struck by how immense and lively the city was.
