The city appeared enormous, noisy, and full of energy. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt lost on where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to your new life in London before beginning your studies at Imperial, so you can make the most of your time in the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just shortly before the semester kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I’d had upon my arrival.

Secure Accommodation

Steer clear of the hefty hotel prices by arranging your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The finest options go quickly, so aim for a location near your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid extended travel times for early classes.

Crucial Administrative Tasks

Upon reaching London, tackle these vital tasks without delay:

Money transfers: If you’re an international student, seek a trustworthy, cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card: Navigating a new city without data is tough. Get a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.

Bank account: Some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to use and friendly for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card: This is essential for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Maximize Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week is key to your student experience. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-organized clubs and societies and engage in what piques your interest.

Even if you’re somewhat reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I did, and ended up forming friendships with some of my closest companions through random campus tours and society stalls. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university adventure.

Navigate Smartly in London

During my initial week, I struggled to comprehend the Tube and buses, leading to me walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.

Walking also remains a fantastic way to soak in the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover Your Comfortable Spaces

London might feel quite emotionally challenging at first. Having a personal comfort spot is beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my home where I go to unwind. The O2, just a short 10-minute distance, is another location where I relax by viewing movies weekly.

Identify your own comfort zones, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench. These areas could be more supportive than you realize.

Venture Around the City

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee places.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and relish the view aboard a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from getting a little lost.

Final Suggestions Before Starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to sidestep fees for single-use varieties.

Purchase a waterproof jacket; umbrellas prove ineffective in windy weather.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal at first.

There’s no need to have it all figured out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I commenced my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To find out more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Landing in London for the first time was an overwhelming experience.
