The city appeared vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If this is your upcoming experience, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to acclimate to your new life in London prior to your journey at Imperial, allowing you to appreciate the city.

Whether you arrive weeks beforehand or just on the eve of term, here’s the guidance I wish I had been given.

Secure accommodation

Arrange your housing early to steer clear of pricey hotel costs. I was lucky, but not everyone is. Seek a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for morning classes.

Admin tasks: key essentials to manage

Upon arriving in London, tackle these essentials promptly:

Money transfers – as an international student, find an economical method to transfer funds. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one right away for data and navigation in your new setting.

Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and budget-friendly for students. You’ll require an account for everyday transactions and income from part-time jobs.

Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

The significance of your initial week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial holds great importance. It’s the time to meet flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies and engage with topics that fascinate you.

Even if you’re introverted, try to get involved. I forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week lays the groundwork for your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. Avoid my error by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.

Nonetheless, walking is a wonderful method to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your favorite spots

London can feel overwhelming, particularly at the beginning. Having a go-to place is beneficial – mine is a local park where I unwind. The O2, a mere 10-minute distance, is another preferred spot for enjoying a movie.

Discover your own retreats, such as a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and refresh.

Discover the city

Familiarize yourself with your new surroundings near campus and home. Unearth local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and beloved eateries.

Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from unplanned explorations.

Final thoughts before commencing Imperial life

Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use alternatives.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective during windy conditions.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t stress if you initially feel lost – it’s completely normal.

You certainly don’t have to have everything sorted from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I commenced my journey at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/applying-to-imperial/" rel="

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time can feel intimidating.
