The city appeared vast, noisy, and fast-moving. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before commencing your journey at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new urban life.

Whether you come weeks in advance or just before the semester begins, here’s the guidance I wished I had received.

Secure Your Living Arrangements

Steer clear of pricey hotel stays by arranging your lodging early. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime locations get taken quickly, so seek something in proximity to campus or along a dependable Tube route to circumvent lengthy commutes.

Life Essentials: Administrative Tasks

Organize these fundamental tasks right upon your arrival:

Money transfers: Utilize applications such as Wise or Revolut for economical international transfers.

UK SIM card: Acquire one right away for data access and navigation.

Bank account: Digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are efficient and favorable for students.

Student ID card: Vital for accessing campus facilities, library services, and receiving discounts.

Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week and discover over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you tend to be reserved, make an effort to join in. I formed strong friendships during campus explorations and society gatherings. This week lays the foundation for your university journey.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel Tips

During my first week, I walked nine kilometers across London due to misunderstandings regarding the Tube and buses. Don’t replicate my error. Obtain a Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify Your Relaxation Spots

London can be daunting. Identify a comforting place, such as a park, café, or bookstore, where you can rest and recharge. My favorites are a nearby park and the O2 for movies. These locations allow you to de-stress in the bustling city.

Discover!

Familiarize yourself with your neighborhood, including grocery stores, pharmacies, and your go-to eateries. Visit iconic sites, free museums, and enjoy a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your most treasured memories will stem from unplanned adventures.

Additional Suggestions

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas are ineffective in blustery conditions.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

If you feel lost, don’t worry; it’s completely normal in the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more insights into my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time felt like a lot to handle.
