The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I didn’t know where to start. If you are about to go through this, don’t fret. Here’s how to adapt to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, so you can relish the city.

Whether you’re getting there early or just in time for the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure your accommodation

To steer clear of high hotel costs, book your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. Search for a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy trips for early classes.

Managing essential paperwork

Once you’ve arrived in London, take care of these essentials:

Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy method to transfer money. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one promptly for data and navigation in your new surroundings.

Bank account – modern banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and cater well to students. Establish an account for transactions and part-time employment payments.

Student ID card – vital for accessing university premises, libraries, and securing student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.

The significance of your first week at Imperial

Your initial week is pivotal for your student life. Meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies that pique your interest.

Even if you are reserved, make an effort to join in. I forged close friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the mood for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

At first, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, so I trekked nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet disorganized experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to make travel more affordable.

Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your safe havens

London can be emotionally intense. Locate a place of comfort, such as a park or café, to unwind and recharge. My personal favorites are a nearby park and the O2 for movies.

Find your preferred spots to relax within the city.

Discover the city!

Familiarize yourself with your campus and residential areas. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred eateries.

Explore renowned landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for the views. Enjoy losing yourself a little for unforgettable experiences.

Concluding tips for starting at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag – stores impose fees for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas tend to falter in heavy winds.

Participate in unusual events – they provide great anecdotes.

Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – that’s completely normal at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything mapped out on day one. If you are reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London narrative one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To find out more about my journeys, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time was quite daunting.
