Arriving in London was quite a lot; the city seemed immense, noisy, and incredibly fast. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to begin. If you are about to go through this, don\u2019t panic. Here\u2019s how to acclimate to London before your time at Imperial starts, allowing you to relish your newness in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you come weeks in advance or right before term starts, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had gotten.<\/p>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotels by organizing your lodging early. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. Seek out a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning classes.<\/p>\n

Upon your arrival in London, take care of these vital tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an overseas student, find a trustworthy option for transferring funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide excellent rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one promptly to stay connected and find your way in a new environment.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 crucial for gaining campus entry, using the library, and accessing student discounts. Make sure to collect it in a timely manner.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Even if you\u2019re somewhat reserved, make an effort to engage. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your first week will establish the foundation for your university journey.<\/p>\n

    Travel smart in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was memorable yet hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent method to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be quite intense. Locate a comforting place, such as a park, caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining spots.<\/p>\n
