The city felt enormous, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was overwhelmed. If you’re about to go through this experience, have no fear. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before you begin at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new urban life.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before classes start, here’s what I wish I had been aware of when I first arrived.

Secure Accommodations

Don’t delay in arranging your housing unless you want to rack up expenses on hotels. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime spots are taken quickly, so try to locate something close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes.

Necessary Administrative Tasks

Once in London, deal with these vital tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, find a dependable, cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better rates.

UK SIM card – navigating a new city is challenging without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan quickly.

Open a bank account – some banks might require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating to students. Create an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Obtain a student ID card – this is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.

Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital. It’s the moment when you’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you’re timid, try to get involved. I made some of my closest friends during campus tours and society activities. This week lays the groundwork for your university journey.

Navigate London Wisely

At first, I struggled to grasp the Tube and bus systems and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically. Walking is still an excellent way to unearth the city’s hidden treasures.

Discover Your Favorite Spots

London can feel overwhelming. Having a place of comfort is beneficial. For me, it’s a local park and the O2, where I relax weekly. Identify your own spots, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.

Go Out and Explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from unplanned explorations.

Final Recommendations

Carry a reusable bag – shops charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can’t hold up in windy conditions.

Participate in unique events – they create wonderful memories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything settled on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/applying-to-imperial/" rel

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite intense.
