The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to face this situation, don’t be concerned. Here are my tips to assist you in acclimating to London prior to your time at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new urban life.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just moments before classes, here’s the counsel I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel stays by organizing your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune. The top choices disappear fast, so target a place close to campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize commuting durations.

Life Administration: Key Tasks to Address

Once you’re in London, focus on these important tasks:

Money transfers – International students require a dependable method to transfer funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide attractive rates.

UK SIM card – Obtain one right away for data and navigation.

Bank account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer swift and student-friendly services. Open an account for managing transactions and receiving part-time job payouts.

Student ID card – Crucial for campus entry, library access, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.

Your First Week at Imperial is Key

Your initial week is critical for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel

At first, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking is excellent for uncovering hidden treasures, but the Oyster card is a must-have.

Discover Your Relaxation Spots

London can feel like too much at times. Identify a soothing place, such as a park, cafe, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My go-to spots are a nearby park and the O2, where I enjoy watching a movie. These venues help you remain centered in the vast city.

Get Curious!

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods around campus and your residence. Find supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your favored eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take in the sights from a double-decker bus. Some of your greatest memories will emerge from spontaneous exploration.

Last-minute Suggestions Before Starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – Shops charge for disposable ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas aren’t very helpful in blustery conditions.

Participate in unique events – They create excellent anecdotes.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – It’s a common feeling initially.

You don’t have to have it all figured out on the first day. If you’re viewing this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/life-at-imper

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to handle.
