Here\u2019s how to acclimatize to London before starting your journey at Imperial, ensuring you make the most of the city.<\/p>\n<p>Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the term, here\u2019s the guidance I wish someone had shared with me.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First things first: secure a place to stay<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Steer clear of costly hotels by organizing accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. The prime options vanish fast! Strive for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, as lengthy commutes aren&#8217;t ideal for early morning classes.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Administrative tasks: taking care of essential matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Upon your arrival, prioritize these necessities:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, identify a trustworthy and budget-friendly method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 navigating a new city is challenging without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan without delay.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 certain banks require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 this is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and taking advantage of student discounts. Obtain it at your earliest convenience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Your first week at Imperial is vital<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The inaugural week at Imperial is of great importance. It\u2019s when you will connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you&#8217;re introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I built lasting friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society fairs. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Exploring London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>During my initial week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to enjoy cheaper rides on the Tube and buses. Walking remains an excellent way to discover and uncover the city\u2019s hidden treasures.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Identify your comforting locations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can be emotionally intense. Having a go-to place can be beneficial \u2013 mine is a nearby park that I visit every day to unwind. My second favorite spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly. Discover your own retreats, whether a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>And make sure to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and home. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred food or coffee spots. Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and meander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will come from getting a little lost!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final thoughts before you dive into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Get a reusable bag \u2013 shops impose charges for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don\u2019t work well in windy conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Say yes to unconventional events \u2013 they can lead to fantastic stories.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t stress if you feel lost \u2013 it&#8217;s a common feeling at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There&#8217;s no need for everything to be planned out on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial.
