The city seemed vast, noisy, and full of energy. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt unsure of how to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you adapt to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to savor the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First and foremost: secure a place to stay

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by arranging your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the best options get snapped up quickly. Try to find somewhere close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for early morning classes.

Administrative tasks: addressing necessary essentials

Upon landing in London, tackle these essentials:

Money transfers – as an international student, locate a trustworthy, cost-effective method to send money from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut offer superior exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one right away for data usage and navigation in an unfamiliar area.

Bank account – certain banks need a UK address, but digital options like Monzo or Starling are fast and friendly to students. Set up an account for routine transactions and part-time job pay.

Student ID card – this allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal

Your first week at Imperial holds significant importance. It’s the time when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and participate in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society fairs. Your first week sets the stage for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my initial week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic but unforgettable. Don’t follow my lead. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for cheaper fares on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. London is filled with hidden treasures you’ll uncover through wandering.

Identify your comfort zones

London can be quite emotionally taxing, especially at the beginning. Having a go-to spot can be soothing – mine is a park near my residence where I retreat daily to unwind. My second favorite place is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I enjoy watching movies weekly.

Discover your own comfort zones, be it a café, bookstore, or a bench by the riverside. These areas will help you decompress and rejuvenate.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and home. Locate your local grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries or coffee shops.

Make time to visit iconic landmarks, check out free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and wander without a set agenda. Some of your most cherished memories will be made by getting a bit lost!

Final reminders before immersing yourself in Imperial student life

Obtain a reusable bag – stores generally charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t suffice during windy showers.

Accept invitations to unique events – they lead to great stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences that at the outset.

You don’t need to have everything figured out on the very first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in.
