Stepping into London for the very first time was a bit daunting; the city appeared expansive, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar spot, there’s no need to fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to your new life in London prior to your commencement at Imperial, so you can relish being a newcomer in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re arriving a few weeks in advance or just before the term kicks off, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had received when I landed.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Book your lodging early to steer clear of high hotel costs. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the finest spots are snatched up quickly. Try to locate a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long journeys for morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: managing the essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you’re in London, make sure to tackle these critical tasks without delay:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut can help you sidestep unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one swiftly to ensure you have data for navigation in an unfamiliar area.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 some banks need a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this is essential for entering campus buildings, the library, and enjoying student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your inaugural week at Imperial matters most<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for your academic experience. It\u2019s the perfect time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and register for activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you\u2019re a bit reserved, make an effort to join in. I did and formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society booths. The tone of your university journey is set during that first week.<\/p>\n

    Exploring London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    <pDuring my initial week, I was clueless about the Tube or buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but a bit chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses more affordably.<\/p>\n

    Nonetheless, walking remains a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally taxing, especially in the beginning. Having a favorite place to go makes a difference \u2013 for me, it’s the park near my home where I escape to each day for some peace. My second comforting place is the O2, located just 10 minutes away, where I unwind weekly by catching a movie.<\/p>\n

    Discover your own retreats, such as a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can relax and recharge.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you will frequent around your campus and accommodation. Unearth your local grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred spots for food or coffee.<\/p>\n

    Check out iconic landmarks, browse free museums, take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus, and roam without a specific agenda. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from moments of getting a bit lost!<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before diving into life at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Obtain a reusable bag \u2013 stores often impose charges for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas aren\u2019t very useful against strong winds.<\/li>\n
    • Accept invitations for unconventional events \u2013 they make for excellent stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t panic if you feel disoriented \u2013 everyone goes through that at the start.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      There\u2019s no need to have everything completely sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I stood when I initiated my journey at Imperial. So take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
