With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain of where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position soon, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to settle into London before commencing your journey at Imperial, allowing you to savor the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just in time for the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure your accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotels by booking your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. Look for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes to morning lectures.

Administrative tasks: must-do

Upon your arrival, take care of these essential tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and budget-friendly way to send money. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide excellent exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one swiftly to ensure you’re not stranded without data for navigation.

Bank account – consider digital banks such as Monzo or Starling, which are fast and student-friendly. Establish one for daily transactions and payments from part-time jobs.

Student ID card – vital for accessing campus, utilizing the library, and receiving student discounts. Acquire yours without delay.

Your first week at Imperial matters

The initial week is crucial for shaping your student experience. Get to know your flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies.

Even if you tend to be reserved, make an effort to engage. I cultivated lasting friendships during campus tours and society stands. This week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

Initially, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers to explore. Don’t make the same mistake. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to reduce travel costs.

Walking still offers an excellent way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify your favorite spots

London can be emotionally intense. Identify a comforting place, like a park, café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.

My personal favorite spots include a nearby park and the O2, where I catch movies every week.

Discover the city

Get acquainted with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining spots.

Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most memorable experiences will stem from wandering off the beaten path.

Final thoughts before embarking on your Imperial journey

Invest in a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use ones.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are often ineffective in windy conditions.

Participate in unique events – they create wonderful stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal at first.

You don’t need everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To delve deeper into my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London was an awe-inspiring experience; the city felt enormous, noisy, and bustling.
