Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t be concerned. Here’s some guidance to aid you in acclimating to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, so you can relish all that the city has to offer.

Whether you arrive a few weeks in advance or just before term kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.

Secure Housing

Prevent the exorbitant costs of hotels by organizing your accommodation early. I was lucky, but not everyone experiences the same, as the best choices are taken swiftly. Seek a location close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Key Administrative Tasks

Upon reaching London, promptly attend to these key tasks:

Money Transfers – As an international student, discover a trustworthy and economical method for transferring funds from your home country. Applications like Wise or Revolut can assist in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Obtain a UK SIM card with data right away to navigate London effectively.

Bank Account – Quickly establish a bank account for daily expenses and payments from part-time work. Digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students.

Student ID Card – Collect your student ID card quickly to gain access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts.

Significance of the Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student journey. It’s the opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you are reserved, challenge yourself to join in. Some of my closest friends were made during campus tours and society gatherings. Your initial week sets the foundation for your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

At first, I struggled with understanding the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometre trek across the city. Avoid my blunder by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for economical travel on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent way to see the city and uncover its hidden treasures.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London might feel intimidating initially. Having a favorite spot can be comforting – mine is a local park where I visit every day to unwind. Another place I enjoy is the O2, just a 10-minute journey away, where I catch movies weekly to de-stress.

Identify your own places, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to relax and recharge.

Explore the City

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and your go-to dining or coffee spots.

Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and wander without a set agenda. Some of your fondest memories will stem from the adventures of getting slightly lost.

Final Insights for Starting at Imperial

Bring a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket since umbrellas can’t handle the wind.

Attend unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented at first – it’s perfectly normal.

You don’t need to have everything resolved on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial.
