With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain where to start. If you find yourself in this situation soon, don’t worry. Here’s how to acclimate in London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish your new life in the city.

Whether you arrive weeks ahead or right before classes start, here’s the guidance I wish I’d had upon my arrival.

First things first: secure a living arrangement

Arrange your lodging in advance to sidestep expensive hotel fees. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as prime choices disappear swiftly. Try to find accommodation close to your campus or a reliable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early morning lectures.

Life admin: handling the necessary basics

Once you arrive in London, promptly tackle the following:

Money transfers – as an overseas student, discover a dependable and economical method to transfer funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – data is crucial for navigation. Secure a UK SIM card and data plan without delay.

Bank account – some banks might ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – this is essential for gaining access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.

The inaugural week at Imperial is crucial

Your first week at Imperial is key to your student journey. It’s when you’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to engage with over 350 student-led clubs and societies and immerse yourself in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you are reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I did, and I made some of my closest friends during campus tours and society stalls. This week sets the foundation for your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was an experience, albeit chaotic. Prevent this by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares.

Nonetheless, walking remains the best way to savor the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures just by wandering.

Identify your comfort zones

London can feel overwhelming emotionally at first. Having a comforting place is beneficial – mine is a local park where I retreat daily to unwind. My second favorite spot is the O2, just a ten-minute walk away, where I enjoy catching movies weekly to relax.

Seek out your own places, whether it be a café, a bookstore, or a riverside seat, to chill and recharge.

And don’t skip out on exploration!

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Pinpoint your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee locations.

Visit iconic sites, explore free museums, and ride a red double-decker bus for the sights. Some of your most treasured memories will arise from getting a tad lost!

Final advice before diving into Imperial student life

Grab a reusable bag – stores frequently charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up against the wind.

Attend unique events – they create fantastic stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – that’s a common feeling at first.

You’re not required to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better place than I was when I commenced my journey at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my journey, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Landing in London was initially daunting due to its size and speed.
