Stepping foot in London for the first time was a lot to handle. The city appeared vast, noisy, and buzzing with activity. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need for concern. Here\u2019s how to adapt to London before beginning your studies at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new urban lifestyle.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to term, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received.<\/p>\n

Avoid pricey hotels by arranging your lodging ahead of time. I was fortunate, but not everyone has that luck. The most desirable spots get booked swiftly, so strive to find somewhere close to campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes.<\/p>\n

Attend to these vital tasks soon after your arrival in London:<\/p>\n

  • Bank account: Some banks may require a UK address, but digital options like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. An account will be necessary for everyday transactions and part-time employment salaries.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card: This is essential for accessing campus facilities, the library, and availing student discounts. Obtain it without delay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week is vital. This is when you\u2019ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you feel timid, challenge yourself to get involved. During campus tours and society events, I forged lasting friendships. This week will pave the way for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Navigate London wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers to explore. It was an experience to remember, though chaotic. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel at a lower cost. Walking is still fantastic for uncovering hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify comforting spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel daunting. Seek out a comforting location, like a nearby park or the O2 for films. These spots will allow you to unwind and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Discover the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with both your campus and residential areas. Explore local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to eateries. Visit iconic sites, free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path.<\/p>\n
