The city appeared vast, noisy, and fast-moving. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t be concerned. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to life in London before you commence at Imperial, enabling you to relish the novelty of being in the city.

Whether you’re getting in weeks in advance or just prior to the start of term, here’s the counsel I wish I had received when I first arrived.

First and foremost: secure accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by organizing your living arrangements ahead of time. I was lucky, but many aren’t, as the best choices vanish quickly. Try to find a residence near your campus or along a dependable Tube route, since lengthy commutes for early classes can be challenging.

Life tasks: sorting out the essential items

Once you arrive in London, focus on these tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, you’ll require an economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – having data is vital for getting around. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you land.

Bank account – some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and cater well to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.

Student ID card – this is crucial for gaining access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as soon as you can.

The first week at Imperial is key

Your initial week at Imperial is significant for your student journey. It’s a time to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in activities that capture your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to take part. I did, and I forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society events. Your first week sets the stage for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet tumultuous experience. Don’t emulate my error. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses economically.

Even so, walking remains the best way to savor the city and its culture. London has numerous hidden treasures you’ll uncover by exploring on foot.

Discover your comfort zones

London can be emotionally intense, particularly at first. Having a go-to spot helps – mine is a nearby park I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly to relax.

Identify your own comfort spots, whether a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These places for relaxation and reflection are priceless.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with areas you will frequently visit around campus and home. Identify your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.

Explore famous landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for spectacular views. Spend your weekends discovering the city. Some of your most cherished memories will come from embracing a little unpredictability!

Final pointers before diving into student life at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – shops often charge for single-use bags.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can struggle against the wind.

Participate in unusual events – they lead to memorable stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences this initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-im

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time was quite daunting.
