The city felt vibrant, speedy, and slightly intimidating. With only a suitcase and Google Maps for support, I felt disoriented. If you are about to embark on this journey, take heart. Here’s how to acclimate to London prior to starting at Imperial, allowing you to savor the city to its fullest.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just moments before the semester begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation

Prevent expensive hotel expenses by arranging housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime choices vanish quickly! Target a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long travel times.

Essential Tasks Upon Arrival

Once you get here, prioritize these tasks:

Money transfers – International students require economical methods for transferring funds. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM card – Vital for navigation and communication. Acquire one right away.

Bank account – Digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and suit students well. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – This is essential for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.

Your First Week at Imperial Matters

Your inaugural week is significant for meeting flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Make the most of Welcome Week to investigate over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you feel reserved, challenge yourself to participate. I forged lasting friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week shapes your university experience.

Travel Wisely in London

At first, I struggled with navigating the Tube or buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. Don’t follow in my footsteps. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. However, walking remains an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel intense. Locate a relaxing spot, like a park, café, or bookstore, to recharge. For me, it’s a local park and the O2, where I enjoy weekly movie nights.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and dining spots. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from unplanned escapades.

Final Advice for Starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas don’t work well in the wind.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Do not fret if you feel disoriented; this is normal initially.

You needn’t have everything sorted out straight away. If you’re perusing this, you’re already better off than I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

To find out more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Contributor

Categorised under Application process at Imperial

Tagged <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/international-student/" rel="

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon my initial arrival in London, I was amazed by its enormity.
