The city buzzed with noise, was fast-moving, and with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt displaced. If you’re about to go through this, there’s no need for concern. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to your new life in London prior to beginning at Imperial, so you can savor the city.

No matter if you arrive weeks ahead or right before the term starts, here’s what I wish I had known when I first landed.

Secure your accommodation

To evade expensive hotel costs, organize your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the choice places get booked quickly. Try to find accommodation close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early morning lectures.

Critical life organization

Upon arriving in London, promptly take care of these necessities:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy and economical way to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data access and navigation in your new setting.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and cater to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.

Student ID card – it allows entry to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it without delay.

The significance of your first week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for your student experience. It’s when you will encounter flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and sign up for those that pique your interest.

Even if you consider yourself shy, urge yourself to get involved. I did, and I made close friends during campus tours and society events. This week establishes the groundwork for your university adventure.

Navigate London wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and walked nine kilometers across the city. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel by Tube and bus.

Walking remains a fantastic method to uncover the city and find hidden treasures.

Discover your favorite spots

London can be intense, particularly at first. Having a comfortable location is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I relax. I also frequent the O2 weekly to catch movies and unwind.

Identify your own comforting spots, like a café, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, to recharge and refresh.

Investigate the city

Familiarize yourself with your new neighborhood around campus and your residence. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your favorite eateries.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for picturesque views. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from moments of getting a bit lost!

Final advice before immersing in Imperial life

Carry a reusable bag – stores impose fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective during windy conditions.

Participate in unique events – they provide excellent stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience initially.

You don’t have to have everything resolved on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

To discover more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/applying-to-imperial

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon my initial arrival in London, I found it to be extensive and intimidating.
