The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you are about to take a similar leap, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to your new life in London before your studies at Imperial begin, ensuring you make the most of the city.

Whether you’re getting here a few weeks ahead or right before classes commence, here’s the counsel I wish I had received when I arrived.

First things first: secure your accommodation

To prevent expensive hotel costs, book your lodging early. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the prime options get snatched up quickly. Strive to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early classes.

Essential tasks: managing necessary affairs

Once you’re in London, tackle these essentials without delay:

Money transfers – as an international student, having a budget-friendly method for transferring funds from home is key. Tools like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – access to data is vital for navigating a new environment. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.

Setting up a bank account – certain banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.

Student ID card – this is necessary for gaining entry to campus facilities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Secure it as soon as you can.

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal

Your first week at Imperial is essential for your student experience. It’s the opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and organizations, and engage in activities that capture your interest.

Even if you’re feeling reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the mood for your university experience.

Navigating London: travel wisely

In my first week, I struggled to grasp the Tube or bus systems, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid this by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to reduce travel costs.

Despite that, walking remains a fantastic way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your comforting spaces

London can feel emotionally intense at first. Having a comforting location can help – mine is a nearby park where I seek relaxation. Another is the O2, just a 10-minute distance, where I enjoy weekly movie viewings.

Seek out your own comforting places, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench. These areas provide a chance to relax and recharge.

And remember to discover!

Familiarize yourself with the frequently visited locales around your campus and residence. Locate your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee spots.

Check out iconic landmarks, explore complimentary museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and roam without a specific plan. Some of your fondest memories will stem from wandering off a bit!

Last pointers before you dive into life as an Imperial student

Grab a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas may not hold up in breezy weather.

Be open to unique events – they can lead to memorable stories.

Do not stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience for everyone at first.

You don’t have to have everything figured out from day one. If you are reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was an exhilarating journey.
