Armed with nothing more than a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation, rest assured. Here’s a guide to help you acclimate to London life before embarking on your journey at Imperial, ensuring you can fully appreciate your new urban adventure.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks ahead of time or just moments before the term commences, here is the guidance I wish had been shared with me upon my arrival.

Locate Your Living Arrangement

Steer clear of costly hotel fees by securing accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone finds it easy, as the top choices are snatched up quickly. Strive to reside close to your campus or along a reliable Tube line to minimize lengthy travels to early morning classes.

Vital Life Administration

Upon reaching your destination, make these tasks a priority:

Money transfers – International students seek cost-effective methods to transfer funds from their home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Access to data is essential for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and a data plan shortly after landing.

Bank account – Certain banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banking solutions like Monzo or Starling allow for swift and student-friendly setup. Establish an account for day-to-day transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – This card enables access to university buildings, libraries, and discounts for students. Retrieve it as soon as you can.

Maximize Your Initial Week at Imperial

The first week is essential for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if apprehensive, encourage yourself to join in; I formed close friendships during campus tours and society events. Your inaugural week will shape your university experience.

Travel Efficiently in London

At first, I struggled to navigate the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers around London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to enjoy reduced fares for Tube and bus rides. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover the city’s charm and discover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Safe Havens

London can be emotionally intense. A comforting location can help; mine is a nearby park where I visit daily to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes from my residence, is another venue where I relax weekly while watching a film. Discover your own comfort zones, such as a café or bookstore, where you can recharge.

Discover the City

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Pinpoint your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and relish a ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering without a clear destination.

Final Recommendations for Starting at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag to steer clear of fees associated with single-use bags.

Consider purchasing a waterproof jacket; umbrellas fail against the wind.

Join in on unconventional events for memorable moments.

Don’t panic if you feel disoriented; that’s perfectly normal at first.

You’re not expected to have everything sorted from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I started at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and begin writing your London narrative one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/applying-to

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the first time was a whirlwind of emotions; the city seemed vast, noisy, and full of energy.
