The city seemed vast, noisy, and incredibly fast. Armed with a single suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you’re facing a similar challenge, there’s no need to panic. Here’s how to acclimate to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, ensuring you make the most of the journey.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before classes commence, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune. The best places are snatched up quickly, so aim for something close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes.

Key Life Admin

As soon as you arrive, focus on these essential tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one immediately for data access and navigation in a new environment.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Set up an account for transactions and payments from part-time jobs.

Student ID card – this is vital for entry into campus facilities, libraries, and for availing student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.

Crucial First Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week is significant for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Take advantage of Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re timid, make an effort to join in. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society showcases. This week will shape your university experience.

Travel Wisely in London

At first, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers to get around. It was unforgettable but hectic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more economical travel. Walking remains an excellent way to unveil hidden treasures in the city.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be daunting, so locate a comforting space. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for films. Find your own favorite spots, such as a café or bookstore, to unwind and recharge.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred eateries. Visit iconic sights, complimentary museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from exploring spontaneously.

Final Thoughts for Starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Purchase a waterproof jacket since umbrellas are often ineffective against the wind.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable moments.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything figured out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of my starting point. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more insights into my experiences, read about my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite an experience.
