Stepping into London was a lot to take in. The city felt vast, loud, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain of where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to fret. Here\u2019s how to acclimatize to London prior to starting at Imperial, so you can savor your new life in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you find yourself arriving weeks in advance or just right before the term starts, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had when I first came.<\/p>\n

Secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Skip the pricey hotels by arranging your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Search for a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for morning classes.<\/p>\n

After arriving in London, tackle these necessities without delay:<\/p>\n

  • Bank account \u2013 Digital banking options such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Establish an account for transactions and part-time job remuneration.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 Crucial for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week is critical for shaping your student life. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you’re on the reserved side, make an effort to join in. I forged strong friendships during campus tours and societal gatherings. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: smart travel<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled to understand the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an experience, but quite disorganized. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable transportation.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains the most effective way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Establish your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel overwhelming at first. Identify a comforting location such as a park, cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench to unwind and recalibrate.<\/p>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and dining favorites.<\/p>\n

    Explore notable landmarks, visit museums, take a double-decker bus ride, and meander without an agenda. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path!<\/p>\n
