The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps at hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to go through this experience, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before kicking off at Imperial, ensuring you enjoy your new surroundings.

Whether you’re coming in early or just prior to the term, here’s the guidance I wished someone had shared with me.

Secure Your Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotels by arranging housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The best choices disappear fast, so look for something near campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes.

Essential Life Admin

Address these necessities soon after your arrival in London:

Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy method to transfer funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one promptly for data and navigation in a new city.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. Open an account for transactions and payments from part-time jobs.

Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

The Initial Week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for making connections with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society stalls. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

During my first week, I walked nine kilometers around London because of confusion with the Tube and buses. Avoid making the same error. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more economical travel. Walking is still an excellent way to discover and find hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be a lot to handle. Identify a relaxing place, whether it’s a park, cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge. My go-to comfort spots include a nearby park and the O2, where I take a break weekly.

Discover the City

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your accommodation. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining spots. Visit well-known landmarks, free museums, and relish the city’s offerings. Some of your fondest memories will stem from unplanned explorations.

Additional Tips

Carry a reusable bag – shops charge for single-use bags.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well against windy conditions.

Join unique events – they lead to notable stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s quite normal initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of the game. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more insights into my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the very first time was quite daunting.
