The metropolis felt enormous, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this adventure, rest assured. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before your studies at Imperial commence, so you can truly savor the city.

Whether you’re arriving weeks ahead or just right before classes begin, here’s the guidance I wish I had been given.

Most importantly: secure your accommodation

To bypass costly hotel bills, arrange your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best spots vanish quickly! Try to locate a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, as early classes can be challenging if you’re more than an hour away.

Administrative tasks: getting the essentials in order

Once you arrive in London, tackle these must-dos without delay:

Money transfers – as an international student, identify a trustworthy, budget-friendly method for transferring funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.

UK SIM card – navigating a new city without data is tough. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.

Bank account – some banks require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Open an account for day-to-day transactions and part-time job salaries.

Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.

Your first week at Imperial is vital

The initial week at Imperial is significant. You’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential lifelong friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and register for activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re a bit reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and made some of my closest friends during random campus tours and club fairs. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

In my first week, I wasn’t well-versed with the Tube or buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. It was quite the memorable but chaotic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to make Tube and bus travel more economical.

Walking remains a fantastic way to soak in the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort places

London can be emotionally intense, especially at the outset. Finding a comforting place is essential – mine is a nearby park where I go each day to unwind. My second favorite spot is the O2, a mere 10 minutes away, where I enjoy watching films weekly to relax.

Seek out your own comfort areas, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These locations are crucial for unwinding and recharging.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the places you’ll frequent around campus and your residence. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and go-to food or coffee locations.

Visit iconic landmarks, dive into free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus for the views. Some of your best experiences will come from getting a bit lost!

Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life

Get a reusable bag – retailers often charge for single-use bags.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective in windy conditions.

Embrace quirky events – they lead to wonderful stories.

Don’t stress if you’re feeling lost – everyone encounters this at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

For more details about my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in.
