The city felt vast, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before commencing your studies at Imperial, allowing you to truly relish your new city adventure.

Whether you’re arriving early or just on the eve of term, here’s the advice I wish I had received.

Secure Your Housing

Steer clear of pricey hotel stays by organizing accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Seek a residence close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to bypass lengthy travels for early morning lectures.

Key Administrative Tasks

Upon your arrival in London, promptly tackle these essentials:

Money Transfers – As an international student, identify a trustworthy method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Acquire one right away for data access and navigation in your new environment.

Bank Account – Online banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and earnings from part-time jobs.

Student ID Card – This is essential for gaining entry to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.

The Significance of the First Week at Imperial

Your initial week is crucial for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future acquaintances. Participate in Welcome Week activities to discover over 350 student-run clubs and organizations. Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to engage. I forged close friendships during campus tours and society encounters. This week will shape your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

At first, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel expenses. Still, walking is an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Establish Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally intense. Locate a comforting place, such as a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for movies. These spots help provide solace in the sprawling city.

Discover the City

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Seek out nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and relish spontaneous strolls. Some of your finest memories will emerge from moments of getting a bit lost.

Final Advice for Your Start at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use options.

Consider investing in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas often fail against the wind.

Participate in unconventional events for unforgettable anecdotes.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s common at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco shopping trip at a time.

For further insights into my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/life

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in.
