The city felt enormous, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I experienced a sense of disorientation. If you are about to face this, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before beginning your journey at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.

Whether you come weeks in advance or just before your semester starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Locate Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotels by securing housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone has that experience. The prime choices get snapped up quickly, so opt for a spot near campus or close to a dependable Tube line to circumvent lengthy travels.

Essential Life Admin

Take care of these essentials shortly after arriving in London:

Money transfers – for international students, platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – crucial for navigation and communication.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating to students.

Student ID card – grants you access to campus facilities, library services, and student discounts.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies. Even if you are reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I formed close friendships during campus explorations and society activities.

Getting Around London: Travel Wisely

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. Avoid this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount. Walking is also excellent for uncovering hidden treasures.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can be a lot to handle. Identify a comforting location, like a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. My favorites include a local park and the O2 for watching films.

Adventure Awaits!

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and go-to dining places. Explore landmarks, museums, and relish spontaneous strolls. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from wandering off the beaten path.

Closing Advice

Carry a reusable bag to sidestep extra charges.

Invest in a waterproof jacket for blustery rain.

Join unique events for memorable stories.

Don’t panic if you feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on your first day. You’re already one step ahead by reading this. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey.

To discover more about my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in.
