Equipped with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t fret. Here’s a guide to acclimatizing to London before starting at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace your new urban life.

Whether you come weeks in advance or just ahead of the semester, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Locate Accommodation

Secure housing early to prevent expensive hotel expenses. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Try to find a spot close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy travels to early classes.

Administrative Essentials

Upon your arrival, take care of these essentials:

Money transfers – International students should seek an economical method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM card – Acquire one swiftly to ensure you have data for navigation in an unfamiliar city.

Bank account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodate students well. You will need an account for financial transactions and receiving payments from part-time jobs.

Student ID card – This is vital for accessing campus resources, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it without delay.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is pivotal for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society activities. This week will shape your university journey.

Getting Around London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, walking nine kilometers just to explore. Don’t replicate my error; get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. However, walking remains a wonderful way to uncover hidden gems in the city.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be a lot to take in. Find a comforting locale, like a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and rejuvenate. My preferred spots include a local park and the O2 for films.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and hop on a double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from unexpected escapades.

Final Recommendations

Use a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas often don’t stand up to the wind.

Attend unique events to create lasting memories.

Don’t stress if you’re feeling lost; it’s perfectly normal in the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London was initially quite daunting, with its enormity and brisk rhythm.
