Stepping into London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in. The city felt immense, bustling, and incredibly dynamic. With only a suitcase and Google Maps at my disposal, I was somewhat disoriented. If you’re on the brink of this experience, there’s no need to fret. Here are some tips to kick-start your new life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to fully enjoy the city.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just moments before term starts, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had been given.<\/p>\n

Locate Accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Book your housing early to steer clear of expensive hotel fees. I was lucky, but not everyone enjoys the same fortune. Target a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early morning classes.<\/p>\n

Administrative Tasks: Must-Haves<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon your arrival, tackle these must-have items:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers \u2013 As an international student, opt for apps like Wise or Revolut for cost-effective transfers.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM Card \u2013 Acquire one right away for mobile data and navigation.<\/li>\n
  • Bank Account \u2013 Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer speedy and student-friendly services.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID Card \u2013 Crucial for accessing campus facilities, using the library, and obtaining discounts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your Initial Week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The first week is vital for connecting with flatmates, peers, and making friends. Get involved in Welcome Week and browse through over 350 student-run clubs and societies.<\/p>\n

    Even if you’re on the shy side, take part. I made lasting friendships through spontaneous campus tours and society showcases. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting Around London: Smart Travel<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At the outset, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading to a nine-kilometer walk. Prevent this scenario by obtaining a Student Oyster card for travel discounts.<\/p>\n

    Walking, however, is still fantastic for uncovering the city’s hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify Your Relaxation Spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can indeed feel intense. Identify a calming location, such as a park, caf\u00e9, or bookstore, where you can unwind and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Get Out There!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get to know local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and restaurants. Check out notable landmarks, free museums, and relish spontaneous strolls. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from enjoying a little detour.<\/p>\n
