The city appeared enormous, noisy, and dynamic. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimatize to London prior to commencing your journey at Imperial, enabling you to relish the city.

Whether you arrive several weeks in advance or just right before the term starts, here’s the counsel I wish I had encountered.

Secure your accommodation

Prevent costly hotel expenses by arranging your lodging in advance. I got lucky, but not everyone does. The top choices disappear quickly, so look for something close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to steer clear of lengthy travels.

Essential administration tasks

Upon arriving in London, tackle these vital tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, find a trustworthy method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one promptly to ensure you don’t get lost without data.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time earnings.

Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and discounts for students. Obtain it at your earliest convenience.

The significance of your initial week at Imperial

Your first week is vital. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved with Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, make an effort to take part. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Travel smart across London

During my initial week, I trekked nine kilometers around London due to confusion over the Tube and buses. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. Walking remains a wonderful way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Locate your favorite spots

London can feel intense. Identify a comforting place, such as a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for movie outings.

Venture into the city

Explore your new surroundings close to campus and your residence. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining spots. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy impromptu strolls. Some of your fondest memories may arise from getting a bit lost.

Advice before embarking on your journey at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to circumvent charges for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket as umbrellas can struggle in the wind.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

If you find yourself feeling disoriented, remember it’s perfectly normal at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of the game. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https://blogs.imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Landing in London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in.
