Stepping into London for the very first time was quite a lot to handle. The city appeared vast, noisy, and constantly moving. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain where to start. If this sounds familiar, don\u2019t fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to your new life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to savor the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive early or just in time for the term, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Book your lodging early to steer clear of pricey hotel charges. I was fortunate, though not everyone is, as the prime options get snatched up swiftly. Seek a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy travels to morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Sorting out life admin: essential tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you reach London, tackle these vital tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, find a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one promptly to ensure you have mobile data for navigation in unfamiliar areas.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and securing student deals. Ensure you collect it quickly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The initial week at Imperial is significant for shaping your student experience. It\u2019s the time you\u2019ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to engage. I forged close friendships during campus tours and society fairs. This week establishes the foundation for your university voyage.<\/p>\n

    Discovering London: smart travel<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I was confused by the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers through London. It was unforgettable, albeit chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares. Walking remains an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures in the city.<\/p>\n

    Identify your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel intense, particularly at the beginning. Finding a comforting location is beneficial \u2013 mine is a local park I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, just ten minutes away, where I relax with a movie each week. Discover your own places, like a caf\u00e9 or bookstore, where you can decompress and recharge.<\/p>\n

    And remember to venture out!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the new areas around your campus and residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining venues. Explore iconic attractions, visit free museums, and ride a red double-decker bus for a better view. Some of your most cherished memories will come from wandering a bit off the beaten path.<\/p>\n

    Last tips before diving into Imperial student life<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 stores typically charge for disposable ones.<\/li>\n
    • Purchase a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas aren\u2019t reliable during windy weather.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events \u2013 they generate great stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it happens to everyone initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You\u2019re not expected to have everything sorted on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I joined Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
