Stepping into London was initially quite daunting for me. The city appeared enormous, loud, and bustling. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you\u2019re about to go through this, don\u2019t panic. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you acclimate to London prior to starting at Imperial, so you can relish the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term kicks off, here\u2019s what I wish I had known when I first arrived.<\/p>\n

Secure Accommodation First<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prevent expensive hotel costs by securing a place to stay ahead of time. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. The prime locations disappear fast, so aim for somewhere in close proximity to campus or on a convenient Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes to morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Key Life Administration<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When you first arrive in London, focus on these important tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers \u2013 As an international student, locate a trustworthy, cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • UK SIM Card \u2013 Navigating without data can be difficult. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Bank Account \u2013 Some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Open an account for daily use and part-time job deposits.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • Student ID Card \u2013 This is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it at your earliest convenience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Importance of Your First Week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Your initial week at Imperial is essential. It\u2019s when you\u2019ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

          Even if you tend to be shy, make an effort to get involved. I forged lasting friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the groundwork for your university journey.<\/p>\n

          Travel Wisely in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Initially, I didn\u2019t grasp the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs.<\/p>\n

          Walking remains an excellent means to discover and uncover hidden treasures in the city.<\/p>\n

          Identify Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          London can be emotionally intense. Having a go-to comfort spot is beneficial. Mine is a nearby park where I regularly unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I catch movies each week.<\/p>\n

          Discover your own retreats, such as a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.<\/p>\n

          Discover the City<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining spots.<\/p>\n

          Visit iconic sites, explore free museums, ride a double-decker bus, and meander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will be made from getting a little lost.<\/p>\n

          Final Recommendations for Starting at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          • Utilize a reusable bag \u2013 stores charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas aren\u2019t effective in windy weather.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              • Join unusual activities \u2013 they lead to great anecdotes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common sensation initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  You don\u2019t have to have everything figured out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I started. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
