The city appeared vast, boisterous, and incredibly fast-moving. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to begin. If you are on the verge of experiencing this, don’t fret. Here is some guidance to assist you in acclimating to life in London ahead of your journey at Imperial, ensuring you relish the city.

Whether you are arriving weeks in advance or just prior to the term, here’s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.

Secure Accommodation

Steer clear of costly hotel expenses by arranging your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The top choices are snatched up quickly, so strive to locate a place close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to mitigate long commutes for morning classes.

Essential Life Administration

When you reach London, make these tasks a priority:

Money Transfers – As an international student, find a solid method for transferring funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Obtain a UK SIM card and data promptly to help you navigate the city.

Bank Account – Certain banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Establish an account for daily expenses and part-time job payments.

Student ID Card – This is vital for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.

Your First Week at Imperial Matters

Your inaugural week at Imperial is significant. It’s the period to meet flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Immerse yourself in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you feel timid, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society activities. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university journey.

Navigating London Wisely

During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses. Nonetheless, walking remains an excellent way to uncover and enjoy hidden treasures within the city.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can feel overwhelming, especially at first. Having a comfort zone is beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my residence where I go to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute walk away, is another favorite getaway for relaxation. Identify your own places, whether they are a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can take a breather and recharge.

Explore Your New City

Familiarize yourself with your new surroundings around campus and home. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining spots. Visit iconic attractions, explore free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your best experiences will stem from getting a little lost!

Final Suggestions Before Imperial Begins

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t efficient in windy conditions.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t panic if you feel disoriented; it’s typical during the initial phase.

You don’t have to have everything figured out from day one. If you are reading this, you are already ahead of my situation when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more about my experiences, read my story at Imperial.

By Guest Contributor

<p class="imp-post__

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the very first time was intimidating.
