The city seemed vast, noisy, and incredibly fast. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself unsure of where to start. If you’re about to face this scenario, take a deep breath. Here’s some guidance to help you adjust to London before your journey at Imperial begins, enabling you to relish your new life in the city.

Whether you land early or right before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish was shared with me upon my arrival.

First things first: secure living arrangements

Arrange your accommodation ahead of time to steer clear of high hotel fees. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune since the best options disappear quickly. Seek a spot close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Essential administrative tasks: getting the basics sorted

Upon arriving in London, take care of these essential tasks without delay:

Money transfers – as an international student, it’s important to find a dependable and affordable method to transfer funds from your home country. Services such as Wise or Revolut can assist in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.

Obtain a UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigating through a new city. Get a UK SIM card and plan soon after you arrive.

Open a bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling provide quick setup and are student-friendly. A bank account is necessary for day-to-day transactions and receiving payments for part-time work.

Collect your student ID card – this will give you access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as feasible.

Your inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal

Your first week at Imperial is essential for shaping your student experience. It’s the time when you’ll encounter flatmates, fellow students, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-managed clubs and societies and get involved in your areas of interest.

Even if you’re apprehensive, make an effort to take part. I did, and it was during campus walkthroughs and society stalls that I met some of my closest friends. Your first week establishes the atmosphere of your university life.

Getting around London: travel smartly

<pDuring my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Don’t repeat my blunder; obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on public transport.

Walking remains an excellent method to absorb the city and its culture while uncovering hidden gems.

Discover your comfort zones

London might feel emotionally taxing at first. Having a go-to spot is beneficial – mine is a nearby park that I visit daily to unwind. The O2, a mere 10 minutes away, is another location where I enjoy a movie weekly.

Find your own comfort areas, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside seat. These places can be more beneficial than you may realize.

And remember to venture out!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you will frequently visit around campus and your residence. Identify your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred spots for food or coffee.

Take the time to visit renowned landmarks, explore free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from meandering a bit off course!

Final advice before immersing yourself in Imperial student life

Utilize a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t fare well against strong winds.

Attend unique events – they often lead to great stories.

Don’t panic if you feel lost – it’s completely normal at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything worked out from the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when beginning my journey at Imperial. Inhale deeply, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my journey, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-im

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite a lot to handle.
